Why I love what I do
Carolyn Salinetti, the incredibly talented founder of Blissful Interiors, sent this sweet message to me just the other day, out of the blue - it had been a while! But it was perfect timing - it landed exactly when I needed a few words of encouragement. Feedback like this is why I love what I do.
Well, that's not entirely true. Working with clients like Carolyn is why I love what I do!
Carolyn had a vision for her business - an interior design business in Melrose, MA, specializing in breathing fresh life into character-filled older homes.
I live in a 1961 mid-century modest ranch house - I knew exactly what she meant, and I only wished she lived closer so she could do MY house! (I love it when I'm the ideal client, lol).
But, like most of my clients, the vision was there but the details had yet to be ironed out. That's one BIG benefit the copywriting process delivers - Clarity.
I have to be clear on what you do so I can clearly tell other people what you do and why it's awesome.
Which means: We work closely together to define your niche (whom you serve + your specialty) and your unique value proposition - why YOU, and only YOU, are the one!
Carolyn's unique value proposition was a few things: Her aesthetic leans toward mid-century modern, she loves old houses and wants to keep their character intact (while updating the necessities), and she knows what it's like to be a first-time home-buyer with limited means and high quality taste!
It's all there on her beautiful About page that tells her story of buying her own 1940s Cape Cod style house. It's one of my favorite About pages ever.
In many ways, Carolyn was her own ideal client too: young professionals who resonate with her taste, her philosophy, and her background.
A great unique value propositions should be something that nobody else can copy or take away from you. It's more than your specialty (that can copied). It's more than your education (that can be learned). It might be your past experience, or it might be something only you can do in a way that's uniquely yours.
But most often, it's you. Who you are. What you're like to work with. What you believe is important. Your values. Your personality.
You're the only you.
Why do I love what I do? I get to help people see how amazing they - and only they - are.
